Nutritional Health Supplements: The Problems With Diets
Advertisements for the perfect weight loss plan are pushed at us every day. Each one promises us a figure like that of a supermodel. Open a magazine or log into the Internet and we see products with similar claims.
What we should always remember is that the human body runs on nutrients. We need specific vitamins and minerals to operate to a healthy standard. So many of these radical weight loss programmes open us to the risk that we will not ingest the nutrition we need. Removing a type of food from a balanced diet may remove the goodness that food would provide.
Fad diets might well help you lose weight but not in the long-term and goodness knows what the effect on the body will be in the meantime.
To understand how the body operates we need to strip away all the hype. If the weight loss industry is making billions of dollars every year (and they do), why is obesity an increasing problem? The reality is there is only one real way to find and keep to a healthy weight and that is to eat a healthy diet in the correct quantities and get regular exercise.
Obesity is a relatively new problem. Until fairly recently, life was a lot more physical and any excess fats were burned off quickly. The main problem was insufficient nutrition through poor diets. Incredibly some of the modern fad diets almost repeat the problem of poor diet, even though we have better education, nutritional health supplements and the availability of healthy foods.
In previous ages stress was a useful asset as it produces large amounts of adrenaline to prepare the body for attacking or running away from a threat. We have the same reaction now but modern stress tends to be more mental and the flood of adrenaline and energy remains unburned in the body in the form of fat.
We collect excess fat in our bodies over a period of time so it would unrealistic to expect to reduce it very rapidly. In point of fact, a rapid loss of weight would actually be very unhealthy, as it would put stress on the body's functions. This is why changing to a healthy balanced diet of the correct foods backed up by regular, moderate exercise is so important. Radically changing to a fad diet removes the nutrition and healthy functions we need.
The body works most effectively when fuelled by a good range of natural foods so this has to be the diet for which we should strive. Of course fruit and vegetables are essential to this regime and a regular drink of water will ensure everything is hydrated and functioning correctly. The best foods are grown at home or purchased locally and these will provide the best levels of vitamins and minerals.
Personally I have struggled getting the exercise I need. The reality is however that the best exercise is not something you have to make an effort to do (and eventually tire of) but something you can easily make part of your day. Walk or take the bicycle for short journeys and leave the car at home. A pet dog gives you ample opportunities for long, healthy walks and you can get excellent aerobic exercise from doing the housework or gardening. Use manual tools when gardening to improve the benefits.
The key to a healthy lifestyle does not involve mystical solutions but simply understanding what your body needs. Take notice of what you eat, the quality of your food, adjust the quantity to what you need, eat regularly and take exercise regularly. You might consider the use of nutritional health supplements if you have concerns about your nutrition levels. A good quality multi-vitamin product containing natural ingredients is a great idea and, if you take care of yourself in these ways, you will have little need for special weight reduction programmes or products.
