Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body. There is a lot you can do to keep your mind healthy and avoid the cognitive downtrends that are accompanied with aging. There are steps that you can take to improve your mental health. Then, there are few things that you should avoid to protect your mental health.

Protective Tips

• When you play a game that involves physical activity, it is important that you wear a protective helmet. You should wear helmet when playing games like cricket, hockey and skateboarding, otherwise you might end up getting a head injury.

• When you are in a vehicle, it is important to wear safety belts.

Healthy Food for the Mind

Eat a diet that is good for the brain. The right type of food will help by supplying energy to the nerves. This will help in carrying the nerve impulses properly. Some of the foods that are ideal for your mind are:

• Fish
• Dairy products
• Fresh fruits
• Beans
• Nuts.

Avoid taking food like candies, cookies and pasta that release serotonin and can make you feel sleepy. It is best to include food rich in protein like chicken, tofu, dairy products and lean meat. This type of food will help in making you alert and sharp.

Sleep and Rest

• If you want to have a healthy mind, you cannot ignore proper sleep and rest. Every age group needs to complete a minimum fixed hours of sleep. An adult should have at least 6 hours of sleep daily. Sleeping helps in re-energizing your brain, as it helps it slow down and get the much needed rest.

• It is important that you exercise and relax in order to get relief from the stress of the body and the mind.
It is also important that you drink sufficient amount of water, at least 8 glass of water daily, in order to have an alert mind.

In addition to all the tips given above, there are few things that should be avoided to keep your mind healthy.

1. Drugs - Avoid using drugs as they can have severe impact on your mental health.

• Marijuana reduces concentration, performance and affects the memory. It can also affect the mind's ability to learn.

• Cocaine has been known to cause serious damage to the brain, especially by attacking the memory cells. It can also be a cause of stroke as it hinders the supply of oxygen to the brain through the artery.

2. Alcohol - Avoid drinking alcohol as it can adversely affect your mental health.

• Alcohol reduces concentration and slows down reflexes.

• If you consume too much alcohol, it can cause permanent damage to the brain cells.

• Drinking and driving is also one of the main causes of fatal accidents.

If you are serious about avoiding surgery and the associated operating room protocols, then you should start taking care of your mental health right away.
